This article is a continuation of the topic introduced in free ways to promote yourself as an author and covers three important self-promotion tools; Google+, Twitter and Facebook Fan Pages.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is an ever-changing, simple yet often painstakingly detailed approach to generating traffic online. For the most part, you can find ways to automate the bulk of it on your blog, but there are also some things you can do on Social Media sites to raise your profile in searches.
There’s no point to re-hashing stuff that’s already been well covered by others, but putting the relevant links in one place has definite value, so here you go:
Take Advantage of Google+ for SEO
A lot of people dislike Google+, and perhaps for good reasons – they certainly came late to the Social Media Party. BUT they brought gifts that more than make up for lateness.
Google+ has a disproportionately large amount of clout in Google search results, so it’s particularly important to pay attention to its use. Luckily none of it’s too difficult or time-consuming.

Google indexes tweets
That means you can use them to get indirect traffic from Google to your site. Check out the detailed post: Don’t ignore the search ability of Tweets–indirect traffic
Make Facebook SEO Friendly
Most people don’t give much thought to SEO on their Facebook Fan Page, but it’s well worth paying a bit of attention to. These simple tips are easy to implement and can make your Fan Page – and hence your site and your books – much easier to find.
Useful Tools for Managing Social Media Accounts
Each of these really deserves an article of its own, but for now, I’ll include a blurb and a link so you don’t have to wait for them.
The most useful tool I’ve found to date for managing Twitter followers and getting more. You can use Tweet Adder to generate lists of people to follow, create automatic “Thanks for following” messages (be careful to keep the marketing tone down on these so you don’t annoy people), automatically follow back, and a host of other useful functions you probably haven’t even thought of.
Your mileage may vary, but I’ve kept this running in the background for about a week, and I’ve gone from 85 followers to 554 without paying much attention to it at all.
It’s a desktop app, but if you’ve got a decent computer you won’t even notice it’s running. Here’s the link: Tweet Adder Twitter Account Management Software
This is a Site-based tool that lets you create a “buffer” of pre-defined post times for Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, or App.net (a site for mobile developers).
You set the times you’d like to post, then install a tiny unobtrusive app that adds a button to your browser. Then whenever you’re on a site that you think your Followers, Fans, or LinkedIn Connections would be interested in, you just click the button and choose which networks to share it on. (App.net isn’t likely to interest many of you).
Whenever you add something to Bufferapp, it just puts it into the next available time slot on whichever networks you’ve chosen. Done!
I top up Bufferapp constantly, which ensures that my Facebook Fan Page and Tweets go out consistently, even if I’ve got nothing new of my own to add to them.
You can also go to the Bufferapp site, login using one of your social media accounts, and re-order your posts, add time slots, and do other housekeeping tasks as well as manually add whatever you’d like to the buffer.
My favorite! Here’s the link: Bufferapp
Automate Posts From Your WordPress Blog
There are several well-regarded WordPress plugins that you can use to auto-post to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and others.
I have to admit that my use of the two has dwindled to pretty much nothing since discovering Bufferapp and Tweet Adder, but they’re still simple and useful for those of you who’d rather not have to think too much about Social Media. These are both “set it and forget it” apps.
Tweet Adder can also be “set it and forget it”, but if you’re like me, you’ll keep fiddling around with it just because you can. So many juicy little options to explore!
That’s all for now, I hope you found this useful! Check out my”Books by BookBlogs.ning.com Authors” store if you’re interested.
